A Normal Ileum

Ileum is the distal part of the small bowel, consisting of more than a half of the adult small bowel, which is about 6 meters long. The ileal mucosa is thinner than the jejunal mucosa. The last part of the ileum, the terminal ileum, is of special importance due to its absorption of vitamin B12 and gallsalts. The ileum proximal the the terminal part is not easily accessed by standard endoscopes except in postoperative situations.
